Roll-out of the Kern 2600
at SZV in Linz, Austria
As the embodiment of a completely new generation of inserting machines, the Kern 2600 combines speed and versatility to create a solution that delivers unparalleled performance and handles even the most complex tasks with consummate ease.
Outstanding performance = lower costs
Sparkassen Zahlungsverkehrsabwicklungs GmbH (SZV), the nationwide payment transaction arm of the Austrian Federation of Savings Banks (Verbund österreichischer Sparkassen), handles over one million transactions daily in a rapid, efficient and cost effective manner – which means that its staff members and the technology they use must meet the highest performance standards, and at the same time meet SZV’s goal of continuously optimising performance as well as rolling back costs.
To fulfill this mission, SZV is always at the cutting edge of technological evolution – which means that its output center’s inserting machines must use not only the best technology available today, but also the latest generation technology. To this end, SZV has been partnering with Kern for more than two decades. The company’s deployment of the Kern 2000 with OMR reading capabilities represented the first use of this configuration in Austria. Following this, SZV rolled out the Kern 2500, and then the newest Kern inserting machine, the Kern 2600 – which is the top system of its type available in the world today.
Investment security thanks to outstanding reliability
This latest development from Switzerland based Kern not only delivers absolutely reliable performance, but also meets the highest technological standards. These are mission critical factors for SZV chief executive Klaus Kirchmeier. “When it comes to our core business, our time window amounts to only a few working hours which means that we cannot tolerate even the slightest wobble in terms of reliability.”
About SZV GmbH
Thanks to SZV, payment transactions in the Austrian savings bank sector are rapid and efficient, and therefore low cost for bank customers.
In 2002 Österreichischen Sparkassen AG’s Erste Group Bank as well as Austria’s savings banks became members of this payment transaction provider. Erste Group Bank’s members at the time – GZV (Gesellschaft für Zahlungsverkehr), the payment transaction arm of Erste Bank in Vienna and Niederösterreich (Lower Austria); SBG (Sparkassen Betriebsgesellschaft), the payment transaction arm of the savings banks in Oberösterreich (Upper Austria), Salzburg and Innsbruck; and ZV Süd in Graz, the payment transaction arm of Steiermark und Kärnten savings banks – were consolidated into the joint payment transaction organisation known as Sparkassen ZV Gesellschaft. With locations in Vienna, Linz, Graz and Innsbruck, 40 percent of SZV is owned by Erste Group Bank and the remaining stake is held by the savings banks.

Modular-Short changeover time
The Kern 2600 integrates numerous features and dozens of servo motors that keep retooling time for job changes to a minimum. This is key for SZV, as the organisation carries out an extremely wide range of jobs over the course of a day, and in late afternoon switches to the production process for account statement mailing.
With the Kern 2600, up to 50 documents can be inserted in each envelope without any difficulty and processed quickly and efficiently. It is thanks to the use of intelligent technology and highly motivated and trained staff members that SZV is able to mail out some half a million printed pages in such a short time month in and month out.
SZV’s operator teams, who work in two shifts, use the whole range of Kern 2600 paper format options (C6 to B5), as well as the Kern 2600’s feed module for continuous and individual sheet processing using variable readers, plus a supply module with two insert stations, each of which can handle a 500 mm high document stack, and features friction withdrawal for smooth folders.
“We need versatile machines like this,” Mr. Kirchmeier notes when explaining why SZV opted for the Kern 2600. The machine’s rapid retooling times, which Kern had told SZV Linz about before the Kern 2600 was launched, raised high expectations in the minds of Mr. Kirchmeier and his team; and these expectations have now been fully met.
The other key factor, apart from rapid retooling, that won Mr. Kirchmeier over is the Kern 2600’s outstanding modularity, which readily allows the solution to be built up to meet future needs. “For me this means that our investment is well protected.
“The people at Kern really know how to treat their customers,” said Mr. Kirchmeier, whose comment shows that Kern puts its principles into practice. From the outset Kern and its Austrian partner Dataform Paper Processing gladdened the heart of adventurous SZV by offering them, in the guise of the Kern 2600, an unbeatable solution that marries advanced technology with outstanding versatility.
The Kern 2600 has more than met SZV’s expectations– which explains why the company has repeatedly opted for Kern’s “Made in Switzerland” solutions.
Thus the Kern 2600 and its users at Sparkassen Zahlungsverkehrsabwicklung GmbH in Linz are making a major contribution to fulfilling the organisation’s mission, as expressed by the advertising slogan, “People count in every relationship.” And in the interest of ensuring that the savings bank’s staff members have as much time as possible to serve their customers, SZV’s back office processes are automated to the greatest possible extent.
Kern shares this same goal. One of the company’s guiding principles – “Our processes are resolutely customer centered” – is representative of the commitment of Kern’s staff to implementing the company’s vision. And this includes making Kern an ideal partner for customer friendly and innovative solutions for documentation management, information distribution and process automation.
Kern’s partnership of long standing with SZV Linz GmbH is a prime example of how such a vision can be implemented successfully.
