[ Highlights & Course Conditions ]
We had a 12:00 PM Shotgun Start beginning at Hole 5. I arrived early and noted a green speed of 9.0. A light rain had been falling since 11:00 AM, leaving the fairways lush and very soft. Thankfully, golf carts were permitted on the course today. Although it was overcast, I made sure to wrap a damp towel around my neck to stay cool when the sun peeked through. After a quick 15-minute warm-up, the horn sounded, and we teed off. However, the wet ground and thick grass certainly brought some heavy challenges to my game today.
[ A Tough Game & Lessons Learnt ]
My opponent (Handicap 12) played incredibly well despite the strong winds, finishing with a total score of 95, while I finished at 111. My game didn't quite go as planned due to four main factors:
Tee shots from the yellow tees on sidehill lies with thick grass: This caused my drives to come up short of my desired distance on about 3-4 holes. This included the yellow tee box on Hole 17, which sits significantly lower than the green and is angled too far to the right (I plan to adjust and tee off from the white tees here next time).
Using a Pitching Wedge (PW) out of heavy rough for long chips to an elevated green: My shots kept coming up short, failing to reach the putting surface on 2-3 occasions.
Using a 56° Wedge on thick grass: I struggled with distance control, leaving the ball short of the green 4-5 times.
During the front nine (Holes 5-13), we fell 2 Down: Notably on Hole 13, I used a 52° Wedge to attack an elevated green over a bunker. I misjudged the distance, leaving it short and landing right in the sand.
[ The Turning Point & Shot of the Day ]
Heading into the back nine, I decided to shift my strategy on the fly. I put away the sand wedges and choked down on my Pitching Wedge (PW) to hit lower, controlled chips up the slopes instead. This tactical adjustment worked beautifully, allowing us to fight back and narrow the deficit.
The big highlight came at Hole 2 (Par 4, White Tees, 390 Yards, Stroke Index 7). It’s a sharp dogleg right with an elevated green guarded by bunkers on three sides, and a red flag tucked on a tiered island ridge. My second shot landed perfectly in the middle of the fairway, leaving 100 yards to the pin. I opted for my HB5 to get a higher, piercing ball flight. It flew beautifully and held the green! I had a great look at Par, but tension crept into my hands, causing me to decelerate and mishit the putt. It took two putts to finish for a 5-5 tie, but thanks to my 1-stroke handicap allowance, we won the hole in thrilling fashion!
We kept the pressure on towards the end of the round with an exciting fightback on Hole 3 (Par 5, ending in an 8-6 loss after two consecutive short chips out of thick grass with my 56° wedge) and Hole 4 (Par 3, where my tee shot found the heavy rough and a couple of chips failed to clear the grass). However, we managed to claw back and win the very last hole by a hair (halving Hole 4 at 5-5 to win the match point through a 0.50 handicap allowance on the Par 3).
[ Conclusion ]
Even though the scorecard didn't hit my target due to the demanding turf conditions, this round offered fantastic lessons. It was a wonderful day of exercise, great swings, and the ultimate "Life Reset" spent laughing and sharing smiles with lifelong friends.
We wrapped up our round at Hole 4 around 5:00 PM. Looking forward to our next battle on the links!
